An explosion on Sunday in Kaung Tup, a village in northeastern Myanmar, resulted in the loss of dozens of lives. Local authorities attributed the incident to an accidental blast at a warehouse storing explosives for mining operations.
Located in Shan State near the border with China, Kaung Tup is under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army. The explosion flattened large parts of the area around noon. The army described the incident as ‘accidental’ and stated that investigations into the cause were underway.
The rebel group has not disclosed detailed information about the casualties. However, reports from local media and a rescue worker indicated that at least 55 individuals, including children, were killed.
Videos on social media captured clouds of white smoke followed by a massive explosion. Some villagers assumed it was an air raid by Myanmar’s military. Despite a cease-fire agreement in October, rebels claim the military continues its attacks.
‘The sound was so loud that we thought an aircraft was dropping bombs,’ said Lway Poe Nge, a resident of Kaung Tup, speaking by phone. ‘My house was completely destroyed.’
She recounted how she and her mother managed to escape by quickly fleeing their home. Tragically, her cousin, residing next door, died when debris collapsed the house.
