The Ohio State-Texas matchup on Saturday was set to significantly impact the national championship aspirations of the losing team. Initially, it appeared Texas would face such a setback as they entered the fourth quarter trailing.
However, the Longhorns executed a remarkable turnaround. With a three-touchdown fourth quarter, they erased a 20-point deficit to achieve a surprising victory over the Buckeyes. This defeat marked a painful upset for Ohio State and served as a redemption moment for Texas quarterback Arch Manning after last year’s season-opening loss to OSU.
Manning expressed pride in his team’s efforts across all areas. He acknowledged it wasn’t an aesthetically pleasing win but emphasized the importance of perseverance. Manning stated, “I’m just so proud of our guys in all three phases. It wasn’t pretty, but we found a way to win. That’s what good teams do. We’ve got a bunch of good players. Lot of leaders. It’s going to be a fun night.” Notably, Manning reflected on last year’s loss, revealing, “I had nightmares about that game last year. So, we finally got a good win tonight.”
This triumph provided both Manning and UT head coach Steve Sarkisian with a significant addition to their coaching records. Moreover, it established Texas as a contender for the national championship. Following their victory, Texas’s national title odds experienced an increase. According to Polymarket, their odds rose from 11% before the game to 17% afterward. Conversely, Ohio State witnessed a rise in its odds from 12% to 14%, sharing the second-best odds in the country with Notre Dame.
Texas’s thrilling win also influenced the team’s rankings. The Longhorns ascended to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. Additionally, they secured the No. 2 spot in ESPN’s FPI Top 25 Rankings.
