A traffic stop in Miami-Dade led to a tragic accident on Wednesday night when a wanted man attempted to evade law enforcement, resulting in a fatal crash. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, at 7:42 p.m., deputies initiated a stop at Northwest 51st Terrace and 33rd Avenue. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Luis Manuel Perez, had an outstanding warrant.
After deputies realized the warrant, Perez fled the scene. During the subsequent pursuit, he entered a dead-end street, then turned back and ran a stop sign. This action led to a collision with another vehicle, causing that vehicle to overturn.
The overturned vehicle collided with an unmarked sheriff’s office car, which was occupied by a deputy involved in the search. The civilian vehicle’s driver was transported to Ryder Trauma Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue in critical condition but later succumbed to the injuries.
The deceased driver’s identity has not been released by authorities. Following the events, Perez was apprehended at Northwest 53rd Street and 33rd Avenue. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation. An arrest affidavit indicates a military hold on Perez.
The sheriff’s office Traffic Homicide unit is currently investigating the incident. Updates will be provided as more details emerge.
