Gov. Greg Abbott Appoints Don Huffines as Texas Comptroller
On Thursday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Don Huffines, a former rival and immigration hard-liner, as the state comptroller. This appointment signifies a move towards unifying the Republican Party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Huffines is known for his staunch conservative stance and has been a prominent figure in Texas politics.
Huffines previously served as a state senator and is a prominent real estate developer in the Dallas area. He challenged Governor Abbott in the 2022 election, arguing that Abbott’s governance was not conservative enough. Now, with the Democrats gaining momentum, Abbott and other Texas Republicans are keen to resolve internal conflicts within the party.
Currently, Huffines is the Republican nominee for comptroller, having won the party’s primary in March. He defeated Kelly Hancock, the acting comptroller, who was appointed by Abbott and had his endorsement in the race. Hancock announced his decision to step down at the end of the month.
In his announcement, Abbott praised Huffines for his blend of business expertise and conservative values, referring to him as a leader who prioritizes taxpayers. The comptroller role, responsible for overseeing public accounts, has gained political significance, especially due to its involvement in managing a new program providing public funds for private school education. This voucher program, despite facing opposition from Democrats and some rural Republicans, is scheduled to begin in the upcoming school year.
