Federal Judge Apologizes Amid Misconduct Allegations

A federal judge in Georgia has publicly apologized to a former law clerk for engaging in inappropriate and unprofessional behavior. Allegations surfaced that Judge Eleanor Ross had sexual relations with a senior police officer in her office during work hours, within earshot of staff. Judge Ross acknowledged her behavior in a letter, admitting her previous communication failed to take full responsibility and express the deserved apology.

Judge Ross, nominated by President Barack Obama in 2014, faced repercussions following an investigation. It found she had lied about an affair with a police officer. Reps. Andrew Clyde and Clay Fuller, both from Georgia, submitted impeachment resolutions against Ross in response to the judicial misconduct inquiry. The congressmen stressed the necessity for Congress to hold accountable any judge who fails to maintain integrity and impartiality.

The American people expect and deserve a judiciary system that operates with the highest level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability, Rep. Fuller stated. Judge Ross has no place on the federal bench.

The investigation, led by 11th U.S. Circuit Chief Judge William Pryor, evaluated claims that Ross attended a political event and displayed unprofessional behavior towards her staff. The special committee concluded that Ross had indeed been dishonest and issued her a private reprimand. She agreed to forgo a potential chief judge role and to apologize to six former law clerks.

Rep. Clyde’s articles of impeachment accuse Ross of misconduct in office, inappropriate sexual relations, and obstructing justice. They allege her affair with a police officer included encounters during work hours and was not disclosed as required. Clyde has co-sponsors, including Reps. Lauren Boebert and Andy Harris, supporting his call for Ross’s impeachment and removal.

Rep. Fuller also filed impeachment articles, alleging Ross exerted unacceptable conduct, partaking in extramarital interactions with a police officer during official hours while presiding over cases. Further accusations claim she falsely denied the affair when confronted and suggested the law clerk might have been retaliating through fabricated allegations.

The judicial committee reviewed evidence, including logs and footage of frequent visits by a police officer to Ross’s chambers. It did not find clear evidence of abusive conduct but acknowledged an uncomfortable workplace culture. Though I can never fully undo the harm that I have caused you, I hope that my acknowledgment of these failures is a small first step, Ross wrote, expressing intention to prevent future incidents.
