A federal judge in Texas has blocked an attempt by Minnesota to extradite ICE agent Christian Castro. Castro is involved in charges related to a January shooting incident in Minneapolis, during Operation Metro Surge. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is considering whether Castro legally qualifies as a fugitive.
The ICE officer, Christian Castro, attended a session in a Texas federal court where he pleaded not guilty to accusations of providing false statements regarding the shooting of a Venezuelan man in January. Federal documents unveiled indicate six charges against Castro for allegedly lying to investigators. The court released him on a $75,000 unsecured bond and required an ankle monitor.
DOJ Charges: The Department of Justice charged Castro with making materially false statements following the Minneapolis shooting incident.
The charges originate from the shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, who was shot in the leg on January 14. Castro, along with his partner, attempted to stop a vehicle before the fleeing driver led to a physical pursuit. According to the indictment, both Sosa-Celis and the driver escaped into a nearby apartment.
Federal prosecutors report that Castro drew his weapon and fired through the front door, hitting Sosa-Celis. Two women and two children were reportedly inside the residence at the time. Castro claimed self-defense, stating he faced assault by individuals armed with tools.
However, video footage undermined Castro’s version, showing he fired while standing and the struggle lasted only 11 seconds. The incident took place during intensified immigration enforcement in Minneapolis. Previously arrested in Texas in May, Castro still faces separate charges in Minnesota.
Legal Developments: Despite legal challenges, Governor Greg Abbott has resisted efforts to extradite Castro to Minnesota.
