Felix Rosenqvist, the 34-year-old Swedish driver, achieved a milestone by winning the Indianapolis 500 after years of close calls. Rosenqvist expressed a sense of relief and joy, attributing his success to a recent personal change—fatherhood. He felt less pressure to win, which led to his triumph in a race filled with tense moments and close competition.
His victory came with a daring move in the final moments, overtaking leader David Malukas with a margin of just 0.023 seconds. This marked Rosenqvist’s second career IndyCar win and his first on an oval, occurring shortly after the birth of his daughter, Stella. “Having Stella was like winning the month of May,” Rosenqvist said. “Winning the race was the cherry on top.”
Despite his personal victory, his wife, Emille, and daughter were absent from the track. In a jubilant display, Rosenqvist climbed atop his car to celebrate with milk, a tradition at the Indianapolis 500, recalling the challenges he had previously faced on the iconic 2.5-mile course.
Rosenqvist had consistently performed well in qualifying but had never secured pole position, with fourth-place finishes in previous years. During the race, a late red flag and strategic maneuvers by competitors seemed to threaten his chances. However, teammate Marcus Armstrong’s decision to back off allowed Rosenqvist to exploit an opportunity to overtake Malukas. Armstrong, who ended in fifth place, admitted, “I was given two options: either I lift or I crash with Felix.”
Rosenqvist’s victory delivered Meyer Shank Racing a second win at the Indianapolis 500. Helio Castroneves, also involved with the team, celebrated his first victory as an owner. The race outcome was incredibly close, surpassing the narrow finish of the 1992 race when Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear by 0.043 seconds.
Malukas finished second for the second consecutive year and expressed disappointment despite moving up in the points standings. “We had the fastest car,” Malukas said. “It was ours to win, but it just wasn’t enough.”
Rosenqvist’s race strategy, including a precise exterior move on the final lap, enabled him to become the third Swede to claim the Indianapolis 500, joining legends Kenny Brack and Marcus Ericsson. In a dramatic ending involving multiple crashes and delays, Rosenqvist demonstrated exceptional resilience, capitalizing on a last-minute opportunity presented by Mick Schumacher’s minor collision.
He emphasized the balance between personal life and professional pressure, saying, “Becoming a dad helped me focus on what’s truly important without the added pressure.”
Elsewhere, Alex Palou, the reigning champion, maintained his lead in the standings despite finishing seventh, after leading the race for a significant duration. A post-race technical violation slightly diminished his points lead.
Katherine Legge’s attempt in the 500 ended abruptly due to a collision, but she remained determined to compete at the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte.
The series now heads to Detroit for the next Grand Prix event.
