The tragic flash floods in Nepal and along the border with China have claimed over 600 lives, with around 3,000 individuals still missing. Rescue teams face challenges due to poor weather conditions as they work tirelessly to rescue survivors.
Rescue Operations
The fourth day of rescue operations sees difficulties with aerial rescues. Helicopter operations await better weather conditions to proceed effectively, according to Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet of the Nepali Army. He reported that over 100 individuals are trapped in a mud-filled tunnel at a hydropower construction site in Nepal’s Rasuwa district. Efforts to rescue them are hampered by dense mud and restricted landing spaces.
A new lake has formed upstream, posing further flooding risks in potentially affected regions. Authorities urge people to relocate to safer areas, as rescue teams are temporarily moving due to threats from overflowing waters.
Impact and Response
Approximately 3,700 individuals have been rescued in Nepal. China reports 558 missing persons, including workers, trekkers, and pilgrims. The Red Cross estimates that 90,000 have been impacted by the flooding, which appears to be triggered by the collapse of a rocky ledge and part of a glacier.
Satellite imagery revealed bedrock underneath a Himalayan glacier collapsed, causing significant seismic activity and swelling rivers, leading to the floods. Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist from the University of Graz, noted that lower portions of the glacier detached, stressing the rapid warming in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region and the resulting impacts.
Climate scientists highlight that 78% of the glacier region is highly exposed to warming, suggesting such events may become more common.
International Concerns
The U.S. State Department reports 90 Americans unaccounted for, with efforts underway to provide assistance. Catholic Relief Services plans to deliver food, blankets, and supplies in collaboration with Caritas Nepal.
22 Americans remained missing from a pilgrimage organized by the Isha Foundation. The foundation emphasized its lengthy history of organizing pilgrimages safely. The flood impacted individuals crossing from China to Nepal, including those at the Gyirong Port immigration complex.
President Trump commented on the flood’s destruction, noting offers of assistance to Nepalese leaders.
