James Talarico’s Challenging Senate Campaign
Texas Democratic Senate hopeful, Representative James Talarico, faces a challenging battle against Republican candidate Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general. Despite this, he encounters another hurdle as Jasmine Crockett, the congresswoman he defeated in the Democratic primary, has chosen not to campaign alongside him. Crockett expressed plans to focus on downballot campaigning, demonstrating reluctance to endorse Talarico fully.
Crockett’s Perspective
After losing the primary to Talarico in March, Crockett endorsed his candidacy, emphasizing party unity over personal enthusiasm. Her views echo Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Senate campaign, cautioning against concentrating resources on one candidate and suggesting broader attention towards various candidates further down the ballot. Crockett expressed concerns that Black voters were not particularly excited about Talarico’s candidacy but expected them to vote Democrat.
Notably, Black voters remain a crucial demographic in Texas politics. Although Crockett won their support during the primary, she believes they will vote Democrat regardless of their enthusiasm for Talarico. A poll by TSU supports this, showing 79% of likely Black voters favoring Talarico over Paxton.
Talarico’s View on Crockett
Talarico appreciates Crockett’s endorsement and urges unity within the party to avoid deepening divisions. During a July interview, he praised Crockett’s work and expressed a desire for collaboration on the campaign trail. He publicly discouraged attacks on Crockett by his supporters, calling for respect and unity.
Earlier tensions included allegations of racial remarks against another congressman, which Talarico denied, emphasizing the substance of his comments rather than racial implications. He aims to maintain cordial relationships within the party as he focuses on his own campaign efforts.
Midterm Elections and Political Implications
Texas is a significant battleground in the midterms, with Talarico polling ahead of Paxton in recent surveys. A Texas Public Opinion Research poll showed Talarico leading by 6 points, marking a strong performance for the Democratic candidate. Despite the state’s Republican history, Talarico’s campaign is gaining traction.
The political landscape in Texas has shifted, with Cook Political Report and Fox News marking the state as a ‘tossup,’ and The Sabato Crystal Ball ranking it as ‘leans Republican.’ As the midterms approach, Texas remains a pivotal state for Democrats aiming to secure majority control in the upper chamber.
