Florida authorities have launched a legal challenge against TikTok, claiming the platform misleads parents about its content while breaching state child protection regulations. The lawsuit, filed in St. Lucie County, accuses TikTok of permitting children under 14 to create accounts, violating Florida law.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated, “TikTok’s business model thrives on engaging children and teenagers, yet parents are deceived about the harmful nature of content being accessed.” The lawsuit demands TikTok to modify its platform to comply with state law and seeks penalties of up to $50,000 for each violation.
Allegations include TikTok’s failure to reveal its content risks, showcasing indecent material such as sexual content, substance abuse imagery, and profanity to minors. These elements are readily accessible to young users, according to the complaint.
A TikTok representative communicated with Fox News Digital, confirming discussions with the state attorney general and emphasizing commitment to aligning with Florida laws. Users under 14 have been notified about account suspension.
While privacy advocates celebrate moves to enforce TikTok regulations, others criticize them as undemocratic. Over 25 states, including New York and California, have pursued legal actions against TikTok for similar allegations.
Florida previously challenged Snap Inc. for targeting underage users through addictive features, despite the legal prohibition on minors opening social media accounts. The Snap lawsuit remains active as Florida furthers its legal battles to regulate social media usage among minors.
