Former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s recent appearance at a ‘Power to the People Fest’ created quite a stir. Wearing a shirt emblazoned with ‘No Kings,’ Smith drew attention with his choice of attire, which many interpreted as a statement against Trump. The event attracted notable figures known for their criticisms of Trump, such as musician Bruce Springsteen, who criticized Trump and his administration during his performance.
Tom Morello organized the festival, which echoed the sentiments of the attendees who voiced strong disapproval of Trump’s leadership. Smith’s presence with his pointed t-shirt seemed to align him with these fervent anti-Trump sentiments.
However, Smith’s timing was questionable. Recent revelations in Congress highlighted how he had acquired phone records of Republican members and tracked communication with Trump’s legal team. Critics argue that Smith ignored boundaries in his pursuit of Trump, a pattern seen in his prior legal losses, such as his Supreme Court defeat in the case against former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell.
Smith’s approach during the Trump investigation mirrors his past. Appointed by former Attorney General Merrick Garland, Smith faced criticism for sidelining free speech and launching another case related to the 2020 election. Concerns grew when Smith seized telephone records of lawmakers, even as they scrutinized his actions. This move suggests an intense drive to undermine Trump, potentially violating established rules protecting the legislative branch.
The released materials show Smith’s team engaged in a widespread investigation, codenamed ‘Plasmic Echo,’ which involved tracking phone activities without notifying those affected. This investigation went beyond lawmakers, involving Trump’s legal and campaign teams, journalists, and even political donors.
Despite internal dissent within the FBI about the investigation methods, Smith proceeded, backed by approvals from high-level officials including Garland. FBI agents monitored communications involving significant political figures and journalists between February and May 2023. This effort included examining Trump’s political action committee to gather details on its operations and finances.
Smith defended his actions, claiming his career had been free of political influence. Yet, his appearance in the ‘No Kings’ shirt at an anti-Trump event painted a different picture to many observers. For Smith, this was less about a new reveal and more about confirming his stance alongside those opposing Trump. The fest allowed him to align openly with long-held views that questioned his impartiality as special counsel.
