Francesca Hong’s ‘Cancel Thanksgiving’ Comments Stir Debate

In a recent interview with CNN, Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist running for Wisconsin governor, responded to reactions concerning her comments about Thanksgiving. Her remarks have caught significant attention due to her suggestion to cancel the holiday.

During her appearance on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” Hong addressed a social media post where she suggested canceling Thanksgiving. Collins asked if Hong still held that belief.

“As a chef, one of the first community meals I cooked was a Thanksgiving dinner,” Hong explained. “With my background in hospitality and owning a restaurant, I value bringing people together for conversation and community building.”

However, she acknowledged the discomfort the holiday causes for some. Hong added, “Thanksgiving brings pain to many in our communities. It’s important to recognize the diverse perspectives, and views can change over time.”

Hong, a state assemblywoman from Madison, believes her culinary background will help her govern effectively, promoting inclusivity and dialogue. She stated this while campaigning for her position as governor.

“Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621,” Hong wrote in a now-deleted 2020 social media post. She compared the pandemic to the Thanksgiving holiday, calling it the “original superspreader event that killed indigenous people and women.”

Her use of “folx” in the post aimed for inclusivity among LGBTQ+ and marginalized groups. Her campaign clarified to Fox News Digital that she does not intend to abolish the holiday.

Hong’s stance has been met with criticism from conservatives, some mentioning her comments as incoherent. Past social media activity also highlights her outspoken nature on various issues. Despite contention, she remains a leading candidate in the Democratic primary, garnering support from progressives like Hasan Piker, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Rep. Ro Khanna.
