EDINBURGH — The Edinburgh Fringe Festival offers a stage for the unexpected. Among the unique performances this year were a Shrek burlesque parody, a solo show inspired by Cadet Kelly, and David Elms’ unscripted hour titled David Elms Describes a Room. The festival, now in its 79th year, concluded recently, showcasing over 4,200 diverse productions.
This venue serves as a hunting ground for discovering new, unpolished talent. Few have honed the craft of spotting hits before they explode more adeptly than Francesca Moody. This London-based producer, now 38, first brought Fleabag and Baby Reindeer to the Fringe, long before either became a television success.
A Producer’s Instinct
Despite her proven track record, Moody insists her decisions aren’t purely strategic. “It’s all about my personal taste; I’m led by my gut,” she shared during an NPR interview from Edinburgh. Rather than pursuing what’s predicted to commercialize, Moody prioritizes authenticity.
From Script to Success
To appreciate her intuitive approach, consider Fleabag. When Moody joined the project in 2012, Phoebe Waller-Bridge had drafted only a single page. Waller-Bridge had been tasked with creating a short monologue for a London theater night. Already working on a separate play with Waller-Bridge, Moody asked to see what she had.
“You get that feeling, a sense of excitement from something that isn’t fully formed yet,” noted Moody. This compelled her to secure a Fringe venue. Over the next six months, Moody, then only 26, learned the importance of trust between producer and artist. She also realized the power of deadlines. Though the script was in disarray just before rehearsals, Moody calmed Waller-Bridge and gave her the space to flesh out the story.
The Evolution of Moody’s Career
Moody’s first encounter with the Fringe was a compromise. Her parents proposed an internship in theater production, leading her to a stint at the festival distributing flyers and managing sets. Since then, she has returned annually.
After drama school, Moody joined a friend’s project at the Fringe, which ignited her passion for producing. A few years later, at just 23, she produced her first show The Ducks, which propelled her within London’s theater scene. This experience led to her big break with Fleabag in 2013.
By 2019, Moody founded her own company. She was captivated by Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, produced it in 2019, and contributed to its adaptation into a Netflix series. The successes of Fleabag and Baby Reindeer have branded Moody’s productions as must-see events.
Diverse Offerings at the Fringe
This year, Moody supported three varied shows: Crybabies: The Scaring, a horror-comedy sketch; Roleplay, a one-woman drama exploring online personas; and Garry Starr: Classic Penguins, where Starr delivers Penguin Classics while shedding clothing. Despite their differences, the shows share a comedic vein underscored by serious themes. Roleplay was fully booked before the festival began.
Reputation and Risks
While Moody’s reputation can elevate her productions, it also sets high expectations. For Hannah Reilly, creator of Roleplay, Moody’s guidance encouraged deeper exploration of complex themes. Reilly emphasizes Moody’s support in pushing creative boundaries.
Yet not all of Moody’s ventures succeed, as shown by the misfire with Berlusconi: A New Musical. But Moody values the pursuit of compelling storytelling over sure-fire commercial hits.
Take Garry Starr. With a storyline involving reading Penguin Classics while dressed as a penguin, this show epitomizes quirky creativity. Moody saw it at the Fringe and decided to produce it due to its pure escapism.
Moody doesn’t strive for the next Fleabag; rather, she seeks productions that hold a unique authenticity worth taking a chance on.
