The 2026 French Open continues with excitement and surprises on the tennis courts of Roland Garros. Elena Rybakina, the Australian Open champion, and Iga Świątek, a four-time French Open winner, both advanced with ease in their matches. However, the men’s 12th seed, Jiří Lehečka, experienced a shocking defeat to world No. 89, Pablo Carreño Busta.
Frances Tiafoe secured a spot in the second round after defeating fellow American Eliot Spizzirri in four sets. The match ended with a score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3. In the evening, iconic French player Gaël Monfils will compete under the lights in what might be his last singles match at Roland Garros.
During the intense heat, players have had to adapt their playing styles. Iga Świątek noted the shift from heavy, controlled play to requiring more touch due to faster ball movement. Similarly, Australian Alex De Minaur mentioned that hot conditions suit his aggressive, all-court style.
Elina Svitolina showed resilience on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, overcoming a first-set loss against Anna Bondar to level with a second-set victory. Meanwhile, Tiafoe’s match showcased an all-American rivalry, with Tiafoe leading Spizzirri in the fourth set.
The hot weather prompted officials to spray water on the crowd at times, offering relief amid rising temperatures that reached 91° Fahrenheit. Brandon Nakashima also progressed, defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.
Noteworthy performances included Luca Van Assche winning against Vilius Gaubas and Matteo Berrettini advancing by defeating Marton Fucsovics. On the women’s side, Elise Mertens and Eva Lys both moved forward in their respective matches.
Young Spanish talent Rafael Jodar impressed with a quick victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic, demonstrating his potential as the highest-ranked teenager in the competition. Elena Rybakina secured her place in the next round with a concise win over Veronika Erjavec on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The early rounds featured competitive matches across the board, with Alex Michelsen and Susan Bandecchi securing important victories. As the tournament progresses, fans and players alike are absorbing the vibrant atmosphere and competition in Paris.
