Welcome to the seventh day of the French Open, where the spotlight turned to a chaotic women’s draw, extended matches, and a surprising breakout star with a soccer connection.
Women’s Draw Opens Up
On Saturday, after defeating No. 9 seed Victoria Mboko, Madison Keys offered insights into the shifting dynamics of the men’s draw at Roland Garros. She commented on the men’s apparent anxiety over reaching the finals.
Keys’ observation mirrored the developments in the women’s competition. Defending champion Coco Gauff lost to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova. Additionally, No. 6 seed Amanda Anisimova was ousted by Diane Parry of France, and Keys herself defeated Mboko. As a result, only four top-10 seeds remain, with Iga Świątek being the sole former French Open champion left in the draw.
In the top half, Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka are the only top-20 seeds remaining. They are set to clash in the fourth round. Osaka prevailed over No. 17 seed Iva Jović in a tense three-set match with scores of 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4, while Sabalenka beat Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5. In the bottom half, Świątek faces No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk, Elina Svitolina will play against Belinda Bencic, and Mirra Andreeva is set to compete against the unseeded Jil Teichmann.
Endurance Matches Steal the Show
João Fonseca has emerged as a notable player in the men’s draw, following his five-set victory over an all-time great, Novak Djokovic. This win could be compared to Roger Federer’s famous Wimbledon upset over Pete Sampras in 2001.
Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo won a marathon five-set match against Martin Landaluce, finishing in five hours and 58 minutes, marking the third-longest match at Roland Garros since 1996. His grueling match included sets ended with tie-breaks.
Cerúndolo’s win was one of several endurance-testing matches on Saturday. Matteo Berrettini from Italy also secured a dramatic victory over Francisco Comesaña in a match lasting five hours and 13 minutes. Matteo Arnaldi added to the list of lengthy matches with his four-hour and 58-minute win over Belgium’s Raphaël Collingnon. Meanwhile, Francisco Cerúndolo, Juan Manuel’s brother, suffered a defeat to Zachary Svajda of the U.S., again in five sets.
Moïse Kouame’s Inspiring Run
At 17 years old, Moïse Kouame demonstrated impressive skill and tenacity at Roland Garros. Despite losing to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the third round, Kouame showcased remarkable resilience. His performance, especially during intense moments, gained the adoration of the French crowd.
Kouame came close to extending the match to a fifth set by saving three match points in the fourth set tie-break. However, Tabilo secured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11-9) victory. Kouame’s progress in the tournament will boost his ranking significantly, climbing over 100 places.
