Kenyan authorities have arrested eight students suspected of setting a deadly fire at a girls’ boarding school. The arson attack at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil resulted in the tragic loss of 16 lives and injuries to 79 others. The fire started early Thursday morning and was contained within a few hours.
The country’s criminal investigations unit identified the eight students as “persons of interest,” according to a statement. Kenya’s education minister, Julius Ogamba, mentioned that they could face charges in court by Tuesday. Investigators are thoroughly examining evidence, including CCTV footage, though the motive remains unclear.
This incident has reignited discussions on the state of fire safety measures in Kenyan schools. A government audit in 2020 highlighted that most institutions were not adequately equipped for such emergencies. Many schools lacked functional extinguishers and alarms, despite a comprehensive safety manual introduced in 2008. Past incidents, such as a 2024 fire that claimed 21 lives at an elementary school, underscore ongoing safety challenges.
In response to the recent tragedy, two teachers who reportedly were aware of the situation beforehand will face disciplinary action. Furthermore, the school’s management has been dissolved for not adhering to safety protocols. Mr. Ogamba criticized the dormitory conditions, noting that congestion and locked exit doors violated safety regulations.
Parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the information provided by authorities. Many endured uncertainty about their children’s safety until details became available. Some students, initially hospitalized nearby, were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi for specialized treatment.
Ongoing investigations include autopsies at a nearby facility where the victims’ remains will be identified. The incident has prompted calls for urgent improvements in school fire safety standards across the nation.
