Goldie Hawn has voiced concerns over a celebrity culture that grants young people attention without achievement. Speaking with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt at the 92NY cultural and community center, the 80-year-old actress critiqued the phenomenon of children and teenagers achieving early fame as social media influencers.
It’s a nightmare,
Hawn said, emphasizing that young people are ill-equipped to handle fame due to their ongoing emotional and cognitive development.
Hawn contrasted the current situation with the path taken by her partner, Kurt Russell. Having pursued acting and professional baseball from a young age, Russell acquired the discipline needed to cope with celebrity life. Hawn noted, Kurt Russell is an exception… He doesn’t believe in all this stuff. He’s very strict on the way he looks at life.
Hawn argued that most children today lack the tools to manage fame’s pressures. They have been given zero tools to understand how to handle it,
she said. Social media, she believes, creates young celebrities lacking the foundation of hard-earned success. She discussed the discrepancy between real achievements and superficial social media fame.
Hawn also shared a personal story about her early career. She recounted advice from her mother on avoiding the casting couch’s pitfalls, emphasizing the importance of honing one’s craft. Her anecdote illustrated experiences with Al Capp, a cartoonist who allegedly propositioned her during what she thought was a professional meeting. Despite the encounter, Hawn went on to win an Academy Award for her role in Cactus Flower.
Hawn reflected on her mother’s guidance, stating, Be the best you can be at what you do. These kids… wanting to be stars… have an inflated sense of self until they crash.
She expressed concern for the consequences young influencers face when they overestimate their success without real preparation.
