Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner delivered a defiant speech at a campaign rally in Bar Harbor, Maine. He expressed gratitude to his supporters as his campaign deals with increased scrutiny due to allegations from former romantic partners, reported by The New York Times.
“Maine, you had my back,” Platner told the cheering crowd. He acknowledged the emergence of hurtful comments he made on the internet a decade ago. Platner spoke about his journey through PTSD, recovery, and personal growth, noting that Maine stood with him.
The 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran is competing against David Costello in the Maine primary on Tuesday. The winner will challenge longtime Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins in the general election. Platner emphasized that despite efforts to bring his past to light, his supporters have remained loyal.
Platner addressed politically motivated allegations, asserting, “When serious and false accusations are made against me, Maine, you have my back.”
What To Know
The rally followed allegations made by ex-partners in a Times report. One former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, accused Platner of physically threatening behavior during their relationship over a decade ago. She claimed Platner twisted her arm during an argument and blocked her from leaving a room. Fifield noted she had no injuries following the incident and stressed that Platner never punched or hit her. The Times was unable to independently verify these claims.
After the story’s release, Fifield criticized the Times on social media, questioning the representation of her account and missing context. A spokesperson for the Times told Newsweek they accurately reported the accounts from several women, emphasizing their commitment to journalism standards.
Platner denied the accusations involving physical threats, stating they are not true and politically driven. His statement resonated with attendees at the Maine rally, who applauded throughout his address. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California also joined Platner at the event.
While Platner accepts responsibility for past mistakes, he remains firm that the most serious allegations are false. With Maine’s Senate race gaining national interest, Platner plans to continue his campaign despite ongoing criticism.
