Hannah Harper shared that her husband made a significant career sacrifice to support her country music aspirations. Harper, who won ‘American Idol’ Season 24, told Fox News Digital that her husband left his nearly decade-long career in law enforcement to join her on her music journey. He put away his badge and now works as her tour manager, traveling with her full-time.
Harper noted that this decision strengthened their marriage in unexpected ways. ‘My husband was in law enforcement for eight years,’ she explained. ‘He put his badge up so I could pursue music. He tried doing insurance on the road for a while, but as things got busier, he decided to become my tour manager.’
The shift happened as Harper’s schedule intensified after her ‘American Idol’ win, prompting her and her husband to find ways to keep their family together amidst her hectic touring demands. Harper is currently on her first national tour and secured a brand partnership with Sargento following the viral success of her song ‘String Cheese’ on ‘American Idol.’ The cheese company sponsors her tour with a custom-wrapped bus stocked with snacks for Harper, her band, crew, and family.
Working closely with her husband presents challenges. Harper mentioned the need to establish ‘off hours’ as both of them work from home. ‘When normal people go home, they are done working. But our work is at home, and it’s tough to turn it off. It’s fun, though, building this together.’
Before her ‘American Idol’ win, Harper had a life with her husband, Devon Mendenhall. Married in April 2018, they have three sons. Harper values having her family on the road, each with a distinct role and responsibility. Reflecting on her husband’s sacrifice, she commented, ‘I feel honored that he stepped down from his job for me. Many men would let pride get in the way.’
Harper has been guided by advice from fellow ‘American Idol’ winner Carrie Underwood as she navigates her rapid ascent in the country music world. Underwood emphasized the importance of separating stage presence from personal life. Harper realized she needs to maintain a balance between her public persona and her role as a mother.
One surprise for Harper following her ‘American Idol’ win was the impact of ‘String Cheese.’ The song, addressing her experiences with motherhood and postpartum depression, resonated deeply with parents. During her meet-and-greet stops, Harper connects with many women who have faced similar struggles, finding these interactions emotional yet meaningful.
Harper continues her national tour until November, with stops throughout the United States and performances alongside artists like Brad Paisley and Lauren Alaina.
