The Northeast is experiencing a severe heat wave with temperatures soaring past 100 degrees. This extreme weather is impacting numerous 250th-anniversary events planned for the Fourth of July.
Cancellations and Safety Measures
To protect residents from the dangerous conditions, officials have canceled, postponed, or moved events indoors.
“The parade is one of our community’s most beloved traditions, and we share in the disappointment of its cancellation, especially as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday,”
Jayne Musonye, Interim Municipal Administrator of Norristown, Pennsylvania, emphasized the priority of safety for families, marchers, and first responders.
In Colorado, similar concerns over fire hazards led to the cancellation of fireworks in at least eight cities.

Below is a detailed list of canceled or postponed events due to the heat wave:
- Delaware:
- Bethany Beach: Independence Day parade on July 3 is canceled.
- New Jersey:
- Haddon Township: Independence Day Parade on July 4 is canceled.
- Franklin Township: Celebration and fireworks postponed to July 10.
- Monmouth County: MonmouthNJ 250 concert postponed to July 17.
- Howell Township: Independence Day celebration postponed.
- New York:
- Port Jervis: Food truck canceled; fireworks remain scheduled.
- Town of Wallkill: Fireworks canceled, rescheduling considered.
- Town of Newburgh: Community Day canceled, will be rescheduled.
- Pennsylvania:
- West York Borough: America250 celebration canceled, rescheduling to August possible.
- Lower Windsor Township: America’s 250th Anniversary celebration postponed to July 8.
- Philadelphia: All-American Block Party canceled.
- Norristown: July 4 parade canceled.
- Southern Colorado:
- Fireworks canceled in Cripple Creek, Cañon City, Colorado Springs, Palmer Lake, Pueblo, Silver Cliff, Trinidad, and Woodland Park.
Special Conditions and Adjustments in Philadelphia
Philadelphia has adjusted several events due to the heat:
- Red, White & Rosé Picnic and Independence Illumination Drone Show times pushed back.
- Salute to Independence Parade route shortened.
- National Constitution Center ceremony moved indoors; Pope Leo will deliver his speech virtually.
- FIFA Fan Festival reduced hours and screenings.
- Gettysburg National Military Park activities moved indoors.
Efforts are being made to ensure safety, including climate-controlled tents and increased hydration facilities.
