Historic Red Lobster Restaurant to Close After Over 50 Years
A long-standing Red Lobster restaurant in Tallahassee, Florida, known as the chain’s oldest continuously operating location, will close its doors on May 24. This closure marks the end of more than half a century of operation on North Monroe Street.
In a statement, Red Lobster expressed its sentiments on the closure, emphasizing the restaurant’s special place in company history and its impact on the local community. The decision to close the restaurant was part of a regular evaluation of performance and lease conditions, according to the company.
This location was the longest continuously operating Red Lobster in the country, standing for 56 years in Tallahassee.
The acting general manager shared with Fox News their disappointment about the closure, highlighting the efforts of a ‘fantastic crew’ employed there.
In recent years, Red Lobster faced financial challenges, closing numerous locations nationwide before entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2024. Experts attribute some financial difficulties to the company’s decision to permanently offer its popular Endless Shrimp promotion.
Additionally, Red Lobster encountered financial strain from a 2014 decision to sell its real estate holdings, which resulted in burdensome lease payments. To recover from bankruptcy, the chain introduced new menu items aimed at attracting new customers.
The company itself has noted operational chaos resulting from the $20 all-you-can-eat deal. After emerging from bankruptcy, RL Investor Holdings LLC acquired Red Lobster in 2024, installing former P.F. Chang’s CEO Damola Adamolekun as its new leader.
Under Adamolekun’s guidance, the chain streamlined operations and introduced a revamped menu. New dishes include lobster pappardelle pasta, bacon-wrapped sea scallops, lobster bisque, and lemon basil mahi.
Last month, the Endless Shrimp promotion returned to certain Red Lobster locations but was offered for a limited time only, as confirmed by Adamolekun in a statement to Fox13.
