People with low interest mortgage rates are choosing to accelerate their mortgage payments, despite financial wisdom suggesting they should do otherwise. Financial planner Christopher Price notes, “Financially speaking, if I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can.” This strategy allows for greater financial flexibility and the potential to invest extra cash at higher returns.
Data from Rocket Mortgage reveals that nearly one in four homeowners is paying off their mortgage faster than necessary. This behavior is surprising given that those who stand to gain the most from this approach are the least likely to adopt it. Rocket Mortgage analyzed early payments on nearly 3 million loans across all 50 states over the past five years to uncover this trend.
The choice to accelerate mortgage payments can limit cash flow, which might otherwise be used for investments or emergencies. Homeowners may prioritize the peace of mind that comes with debt elimination, but financial experts caution against overlooking opportunity costs.
