Pennsylvania released video footage from the trial of Antonio Hammond, who took a 2-year-old girl hostage in her home during a standoff with police. The jury convicted Hammond of kidnapping and various other crimes, according to the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office.
Standoff Details
The video shows the May 30, 2023, standoff’s early moments between police and Hammond, who stayed inside a Harrisburg home. The child’s mother, Michele Peters, recorded Hammond holding her crying, autistic daughter while police ordered him to surrender.
Hammond told the mother police were “trying to kill me” and urged trust in God as she begged him to release her daughter.
The Hostage Video
I love people. I love kids,Hammond is heard saying. Peters replied,I don’t know you. Give me my baby, please! You’re scaring her.
Hammond directed her to keep filming him, believing police wouldn’t shoot him on camera. Peters complied, recording as officers surrounded the residence. He shouted to police he “didn’t do anything.” Peters informed officers Hammond had entered her apartment and taken her child hostage.
The phone recording appeared to drop, muffling the audio.
Background and Events Leading to the Standoff
Hammond, having absconded from parole months earlier, encountered law enforcement, reports said. On the standoff day, officers saw him wearing a mask on a hot day, walking with another person. Prosecutors stated officers saw him with a firearm and attempted to stop him. Hammond fled, aiming and pulling the trigger at officers during the chase.
The gun only clicked, lacking a round chambered, despite having rounds in the magazine. Officers were within feet of Hammond during this attempt. Hammond then broke into Peters’ apartment, demanding her to record him.
The Conclusion of the Standoff
Peters escaped the apartment with her infant daughter. Hammond continued to hold the toddler as police negotiations failed. After almost six hours, a Crisis Response Team (CRT) entered the home through a back door.
Hammond pointed the pistol at the toddler and at CRT members. The DA’s office stated a team member forced the handgun down and shot Hammond in the face. Other officers rescued the toddler, and medics treated Hammond at the scene.
