House Speaker Mike Johnson Highlights the Importance of Historical Perspective

House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the significance of students viewing America with the correct historical perspective during an event by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) in San Diego. This event marked the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

What ADF does every day on the front lines is defend the very foundations of the greatest nation in the history of the world, so that it can continue. We have a great challenge right now because, sadly, the generations coming behind us do not seem to fully appreciate and understand this, Johnson stated.

The ADF Summit 2026 gathered leaders from various sectors, including law, public policy, media, business, education, and Christian organizations. It celebrated the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary by exploring the founders’ role and the necessary steps to reclaim the 1776 spirit.

Participants at the summit addressed criticisms of Trump’s July 4 speech, emphasizing its necessity.

Polling data reflects Americans’ decreasing trust in higher education institutions. Just 38% of U.S. adults express significant confidence in higher education, showcasing a decline from 42% the previous year. Political indoctrination remains a major concern for those lacking confidence.

Kristen Waggoner, ADF’s president and chief counsel, remarked, ADF was deeply honored to welcome Speaker Johnson as a keynote speaker at our annual Summit. She highlighted Johnson’s consistent grace and commitment to principles.

Johnson delivered the final speech at the summit. He shared his encounters with young people on university campuses, stressing the need to reinforce America’s greatness.

I often seek opportunities to educate young people about American history to show them they live in the greatest nation in history, Johnson shared. However, he noticed a lack of awareness among students about America’s significance.

Johnson expressed concern over what he perceives as students being indoctrinated. They see America through the wrong lenses. And I think right now we have a great opportunity because on the nation’s birthday, we can take them right back to the nation’s birth certificate, the Declaration of Independence, he said.
