How To Find Time for Your Interests Despite Responsibilities
Having trouble focusing on tasks or accomplishing everything? Life involves juggling various responsibilities, making it hard to find time for personal projects like a creative side hustle, cleaning out the garage, or finishing a screenplay. Here are five practical strategies to enhance your focus, from tackling distractions to deliberately allowing mental wanderings, so you can achieve your goals.
1. Take a Deep Breath
Stress impacts our ability to concentrate, according to Arryn Robbins, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Richmond. Stress narrows our attention, creating a tunnel vision effect. When stressed, your heart may race, and you might feel anxious. Robbins advises taking a deep breath to calm your body. This helps to widen your focus and reduces the stress-induced restriction in attention.
2. Allow Your Mind to Wander
Dr. Srini Pillay, a psychiatrist, encourages breaks to activate the default mode network in the brain. This network fosters innovation and creativity. Engage in positive constructive daydreaming, imagining enjoyable scenes like walking in a forest or relaxing on a beach. Pair this with low-key activities such as walking or gardening. This helps release your mind for about 20 minutes in a way that boosts creative thinking.
3. Eliminate Distractions
Social media can be a time-consuming distraction. Sammy Nickalls, author of Log Off, suggests setting boundaries by turning off push notifications and removing social media apps to limit access. If these steps aren’t enough, use app blockers or screen timers to make logging on more challenging. These strategies can help in reclaiming your focus.
4. Get an Accountability Buddy
An accountability partner can support you in achieving goals like reading more or starting an exercise routine. Research demonstrates the effectiveness of pairing up for reaching goals. A study in JAMA Internal Medicine showed couples were more likely to make healthy changes if both partners encouraged each other. Consider finding a buddy to help stay on track with your objectives.
5. Remember, Your Time Is Precious
Reflect on what is most important to you, like friends, hobbies, and personal interests. Compare these with how you currently spend your time. Are the lists similar? If your time is dominated by work and social media, reassess how you allocate it. Author Oliver Burkeman urges you to wisely invest the precious time you have, ensuring it’s spent on meaningful activities.
