Former Iowa news anchor Dustin Nolan addressed the widespread attention his recent farewell from KWQC TV6 has received. In a statement released Monday, Nolan emphasized the importance of facts and truth in journalism.
“Facts matter,” Nolan said. “Journalism matters. Being truthful matters. That was my message on Friday, and now it’s being twisted to fit whatever ideology people want. I was not going to speak on the virality of my farewell message and hoped the interest would fade. But now, seeing multiple publications twist my words into unintended meanings, I feel I must set the record straight.”
Nolan’s announcement during a broadcast on KWQC TV6 unfolded as he revealed his decision to leave his career in news. He expressed gratitude to viewers for allowing him to be a part of their mornings, highlighting his commitment to the job.
Amid growing attention, Nolan addressed misconceptions about his departure. He clarified that his decision wasn’t a spontaneous on-air revelation but a planned transition agreed upon months ago. He emphasized that there was no animosity towards the station or industry.
Nolan clarified, “First I was not quitting on-air. I decided with my wife months ago, and the station had the job posted months ago. Second, I was not blasting the news station or the news industry. I was simply explaining my approach to journalism and reminding everyone why we do what we do. Finally, I was not fired or forced out. Again, this was a hard decision for me, but one that will allow me to follow a dream I’ve always had.”
Some publications reported Nolan’s departure as a critique of journalism, a narrative he disputes. He criticized those publications for not seeking his perspective before publishing and for using his family’s details without permission.
“To the publications that posted this story without asking for context and those who grasped at straws to create a storyline that simply isn’t there, you’re part of the problem. Especially the ones who used our son’s name in the story without our permission. Shame on you,” Nolan said. He reassured his audience of his belief in strong journalism and the dedication of local journalists.
Nolan thanked the Quad Cities community for their support. He remains proud of his work and the relationships built through his position at KWQC TV6.
He concluded by reiterating his initial intentions and the unexpected interpretation of his farewell message. “I really just wanted to thank our viewers for welcoming us into their homes each morning and tell them how I’ve approached my job. I really did not expect people to take what I said and twist it into a narrative I never intended,” Nolan stated.
Nolan joined KWQC TV6 in 2022 and shared a Mid-America Emmy in 2025 for Best Morning/Daytime newscast. His professional journey reflects his commitment to journalism.
