The Chicago Cubs have several key players whose contracts are expiring this offseason. Among them is Ian Happ, a longtime outfielder. Happ has been instrumental to the Cubs’ success over the past decade, contributing significantly to their roster.
Recently, Jim Bowden from The Athletic mentioned that one of the Cubs’ National League Central rivals, the Cincinnati Reds, might pursue Happ during the free agency period. This suggestion comes from the Reds’ need to strengthen their outfield lineup.
The Reds aim to be more competitive by 2027. Adding a seasoned player like Happ could enhance their performance. Happ’s experience and skills would likely place him in the top half of the Reds’ batting order, where he could make a substantial impact.
Furthermore, Happ would provide a veteran presence for the Reds’ younger team members, assisting in their development. In the recent season, Happ played 156 games with the Cubs, hitting 24 home runs and achieving 68 RBIs. He has consistently performed well, hitting at least 21 home runs in five of the last six seasons.
Such statistics make Happ a desirable player for any team, and the Cubs are likely to try re-signing him. However, if negotiations do not go as planned, the Reds might emerge as a strong contender for his signature.
