An ICE agent shot a man in Austin, Texas, prompting hospitalization, local officials confirmed. The incident occurred Sunday, with Austin City Council Member Mike Siegel detailing the event to KVUE.
According to Siegel, an ICE vehicle boxed in and sideswiped a civilian vehicle before the ICE officer shot the driver. Two bullet holes were seen in the back of the vehicle. Siegel stated the man was taken to the hospital roughly an hour after the event.
The man’s condition and the events leading to the shooting remain unclear. Siegel emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation, involving both federal and city police, to ensure public confidence in gathering accurate facts.
Officials plan to hold a press conference at 4 p.m. local time to provide more details. Social media video shows an ICE agent with a weapon approaching a blue car, which displays damage on the passenger side.
The Austin Police Department directed inquiries to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Newsweek sought further information from DHS via email.
Democratic Representative Greg Casar expressed outrage on social media, demanding an independent investigation, release of body camera footage, and accountability for any unlawful actions by ICE officers. Casar criticized ICE for repeated instances of misrepresentations following shootings.
Texas state Representative Vikki Goodwin noted on social media that the shooting involved another ICE-related incident in North Austin, with Austin police managing traffic control while awaiting further updates.
This shooting adds to at least a dozen incidents involving federal agents since President Donald Trump’s second term began in 2025. More information will follow as the story develops.
