Immigration Obstacles Affect World Cup Participants

The World Cup is facing controversy due to strict U.S. immigration laws affecting fans and participants aiming to enter the country. Iraqi soccer player Aymen Hussein, featured in a mural near Baghdad, faced a similar issue. Just before the tournament, Hussein was briefly detained by immigration officials upon his arrival at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. After several hours, he was cleared to join his team.

Hussein’s experience highlights the complexities of U.S. entry policies. These policies have become especially significant as the United States prepares to host the World Cup, one of the most internationally recognized sporting events. The Iraqi national team, participating for the first time in four decades, embodies the spirit of the nation’s soccer scene.

Another case involved Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a Somali referee selected to be among around 50 World Cup officials. Unfortunately, Artan was detained upon entry, questioned, and ultimately deported by U.S. authorities.

“The stringent immigration rules have overshadowed the global event and highlighted the issues critics have pointed out since the U.S. was first chosen as a host,” said observers.

The scrutiny over immigration policies comes as the Trump administration has enforced stricter regulations, raising questions about the inclusivity promised when North America was awarded the World Cup hosting rights in 2018. In February, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, known for his connection with President Trump, promised a seamless entry process, which has been put to the test.
