Anticipating a Strong El Nino Event
Seasonal models are forecasting a potent El Nino climate pattern, potentially the most intense recorded, likely resulting in more severe weather. Jeff Berardelli, Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist at WFLA-TV in Tampa, Florida, noted, “We’re likely to witness weather events unlike anything in modern history.”
An El Nino event is anticipated mid-year, impacting global temperatures and rainfall, as reported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). While models suggest it could be a strong event, the WMO warned that spring forecasts are less reliable.
Understanding El Nino
El Nino involves a natural warming of specific areas in the equatorial Pacific, altering global weather patterns. Its opposite, La Nina, results in cooler than average waters. Berardelli explained that an El Nino event redistributes heat globally. Currently, subsurface heat in the Pacific is moving eastward, surfacing from deep waters, marking El Nino’s early stages.
The WMO’s Global Seasonal Climate Update indicated rapid sea-surface temperature increases. High confidence exists regarding El Nino’s onset, with further intensification expected, according to Wilfran Moufouma Okia, WMO’s chief of climate prediction. Typically occurring every two to seven years, El Nino lasts roughly nine to twelve months.
Reasons for Concern
Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources, highlighted notable subsurface warm water anomalies, crucial to El Nino physics, observed historically. These anomalies are unusually intense, sparking alarm.
The strongest events are referred to as “super El Ninos.” Swain remarked that key elements for a full El Nino development are present, suggesting potential for an extraordinary event, though it’s not definite it will reach super El Nino status. Berardelli stated that substantial heat release disrupts climate systems, intensifying heatwaves, exacerbating droughts, and increasing flooding risk.
Additionally, El Nino dampens the Atlantic hurricane season due to Pacific heat dominance. Caribbean regions may experience dryness this summer with reduced tropical activity.
Global Impacts of El Nino
El Nino’s influence is global. Berardelli predicted a hotter-than-normal U.S. summer with significant heat waves. Though specifics are tentative, frequent daily thunderstorms are anticipated in the Southwest.
Forest degradation impacts around 40% of the Amazon, driven by wildfires, logging, and drought, potentially worsening with a strong El Nino in 2026. Swain expects record-breaking global warmth due to El Nino and ongoing climate change. Record-high global temperatures are forecast for later this year or next.
Michael Mann, University of Pennsylvania climate scientist, stated that while El Nino elevates temperatures short-term, it remains a “zero-sum game.” It typically shifts back to La Nina, reducing global temperatures temporarily. Mann emphasized long-term warming trends, fueled by continued fossil fuel consumption.
