Serena Williams’ Return to Tennis Faces Challenges at Wimbledon

Serena Williams surprised fans with her return to singles competition at Wimbledon. Despite the excitement, she faced a setback, losing to Maya Joint in the opening round and injuring her knee.

Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion. She attempted to participate in doubles with her sister, Venus Williams, but had to withdraw.

“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles,” Williams, 44, shared on Instagram. “Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and playing alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately, my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”

Williams revealed her struggle by posting photos of syringes with fluid drained from her knee. This left no doubt about the severity of her condition, preventing her from competing alongside Venus.

Two weeks later, Williams appeared in better spirits in a TikTok video, showing her dancing and captioning, “Looks like my knee is getting better. Finally!”

Many speculated that Williams aimed to use the grass season to prepare for the US Open. She last played at the 2022 US Open in both singles and doubles with Venus before stepping back from tennis for nearly four years.

Williams officially returned to her celebrated tennis career by partnering with Victoria Mboko in doubles at the HSBC Championships at London’s Queen’s Club in early June. Following that, she teamed up with Karolina Muchova in doubles at the Berlin Tennis Open.

As of now, the draw for the 2026 US Open remains unannounced. It is uncertain if Williams will compete, but her knee appears not to be the deciding factor.
