An incident involving migrants in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, has drawn widespread condemnation. A viral video shows migrants mishandling a young dolphin, possibly resulting in its death. The footage depicts men and boys lifting the baby bottlenose dolphin calf triumphantly while onlookers cheered. The dolphin was near El Trampolin beach when it was allegedly pulled from the water by the group.
The actions recorded in the video have angered local residents. Some attempted to intervene during the confrontation. The video shows one man striking the dolphin with a stick, causing serious injury, while others cheered. Some onlookers expressed concern for the dolphin’s welfare.
‘On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, a disoriented dolphin calf swimming near the shore at Trampolin Beach, in Ceuta, was brutally pulled from the water,’ wrote Nadia Garcia Gomez on social media. Gomez announced a petition for the arrest of those involved. Eyewitnesses and local media reported that the animal was treated as an object and violently struck on the head, causing its immediate death.
Gomez labeled the act as ‘extreme and unjustifiable cruelty.’ Dolphins are protected under Spanish and European laws. Residents demand punishment for those responsible.
Ceuta has recently experienced an influx of migrants from Morocco. In July, over 70,000 migrants attempted to enter the enclave. Many returned home, but thousands remained. The incident adds to existing tensions within the community.
Some locals have advocated for deportations and stricter measures from Spain’s central government. In recent protests, residents dismantled migrant shelters at the beach, calling for decisive action to address the ongoing migrant crisis.
