Sony Pictures Television Studios has dismissed Jim Thornton from his role on Wheel of Fortune. A representative for Sony confirmed the termination after conducting a comprehensive investigation.
Previously, Thornton faced suspension amid ongoing inquiries into his conduct. The allegations surfaced earlier this month without further details provided by Sony. Thornton had been the announcer at the game show since 2011.
“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation,” the Sony spokesperson stated.
The incident reportedly involved an American Airlines flight Thornton took in May, as reported by TMZ. A passenger raised concerns about his behavior, leading law enforcement to meet Thornton at the gate upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport. He was not taken into custody.
Thornton’s attorney responded to the allegations through TMZ, clarifying that Thornton did not participate in any illegal activities. Law enforcement officials interviewed him briefly and concluded wrongdoing was absent, allowing him to leave without charges.
Thornton succeeded Charlie O’Donnell as announcer following O’Donnell’s passing in 2010. As of now, Ryan Seacrest continues to host Wheel of Fortune alongside Vanna White.
