John Gotti, the infamous Gambino family crime boss, was known for his sharp attire and charisma. Nicknamed the ‘Teflon Don,’ he evaded multiple convictions and led New York’s Mafia with apparent impunity. Law enforcement struggled to build a sound case against him, as he continued to rule the underworld.
Gotti’s story of power and downfall is the subject of a new special, ‘Gotti’s Guy,’ airing on Fox Nation. His right-hand man offers viewers an in-depth view of the violent rise and eventual fall of the crime leader.
‘I was young, so… I loved it. I loved it all. I loved the power,’ reflected Lewis Kasman, who was close to Gotti. Kasman, considered an ‘adopted son’ of Gotti, had unique access to the crime lord.
In a candid conversation with Fox News senior correspondent Eric Shawn, Kasman shared insights into the Gambino crime family. He recounted a significant trial in New York City in 1990, where Gotti escaped charges related to ordering an attack on John F. O’Connor. Kasman remarked, ‘That was the start of the Teflon Don. It started from that day on.’
Gotti’s leadership began after the 1985 murder of Paul Castellano. Through the 1980s and early 1990s, he oversaw various criminal enterprises. Despite facing serious charges such as murder, racketeering, and conspiracy, Gotti managed to stay out of prison for a while.
His string of favorable verdicts ended in 1992 when a conviction on multiple charges, including murder, occurred. This was partly due to the cooperation of his former underboss, Sammy ‘The Bull’ Gravano, who provided critical testimony. Gotti received a life sentence without parole and died in 2002 while incarcerated.
Kasman admitted that he never grappled with moral issues regarding his allegiance to Gotti. He acknowledged knowing Gotti’s violent tendencies but did not fear him. Kasman stated, ‘He killed within his own… I knew who he was, and I knew what he was capable of, but I wasn’t in fear of him.’
‘Gotti’s Guy’ is set to be available for streaming on Fox Nation starting June 2.
