Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, faced serious criticism from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and international bodies after sharing videos mocking detained flotilla activists. These activists were attempting to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s rights to prevent such actions but condemned Ben-Gvir’s methods, suggesting they did not align with the country’s values.
In one of the released videos, Ben-Gvir can be seen walking among approximately 430 detainees, some of whom are shown kneeling with their hands tied. Ben-Gvir taunted the activists, holding an Israeli flag and making remarks about imprisonment. These actions prompted Netanyahu to call for the swift deportation of the activists.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar publicly criticized Ben-Gvir, asserting that his behavior damaged Israel’s reputation. Saar condemned Ben-Gvir’s actions, prompting a sharp retort from Ben-Gvir in which he accused Saar of surrendering to terrorists.
International Reactions and Criticism
An advocacy group, Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, accused the authorities of criminal abuse and humiliation. The group pointed out past instances of mistreatment during similar missions, suggesting Israel has evaded accountability.
Flotilla spokesperson Rania Batrice criticized Ben-Gvir’s conduct, urging international governments to respond with more than words. In response, several foreign governments expressed concern. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called the incident a violation of dignity, demanding an explanation from Israel.
Italy condemned the treatment of activists, labeling it a violation of human dignity and summoning the Israeli ambassador in protest. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand also instructed the summoning of the Israeli ambassador. Both Turkey and Greece criticized Israel’s actions as unacceptable.
Continued Tensions and Flotilla Interceptions
Earlier, Israeli forces intercepted all flotilla boats intending to breach the Gaza blockade. This action aimed to draw attention to the severe living conditions for nearly 2 million Palestinians in the region. Activists reported that Israeli soldiers fired on the boats during these operations, but Israel refuted these claims, stating only nonlethal measures were used.
The flotilla’s journey began from Turkey, and boats were stopped in international waters near Cyprus. Ireland expressed strong discontent, particularly as more than a dozen Irish nationals were involved, including the sister of President Catherine Connolly.
The U.S. Treasury responded by imposing sanctions on several European activists, labeling the flotilla a pro-terror initiative. Israel defends the blockade as a measure to prevent Hamas from acquiring weapons, despite international criticism labeling it as collective punishment.
Context of the Blockade
Israel has maintained a Gaza blockade since 2007 following Hamas’s rise to power. An escalation followed the October 2023 attacks by Hamas, which resulted in significant Israeli casualties and hostage situations. Critics argue the blockade punishes Gaza’s population collectively, while Israel insists it is a necessary security measure. Despite international tensions, Israel remains committed to maintaining the blockade.
