Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed strong disapproval of individuals she described as “hooligans” for causing chaos during demonstrations in Milan. The protests, which took a violent turn, caused significant disturbances in the city’s historic area.
“Demonstrating is a right. Setting our cities ablaze is not,” Meloni stated on social media. Her comments followed incidents of disorder during a march held to protest wars and the rising cost of living. The demonstrations escalated, with participants wearing masks, throwing objects at the police, and igniting fires.
The upheaval primarily took place in Piazza del Duomo, located in front of Milan’s renowned Gothic cathedral, and extended to the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This location is known for luxurious shopping and architectural elegance.
Giuseppe Sala, the center-left mayor of Milan, acknowledged the validity of the protesters’ concerns. However, he firmly denounced both the attacks on law enforcement officers and the resulting damage to the city, asserting these actions were not justifiable.
The situation is evolving and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
