Jalen Brunson and his father, Rick Brunson, shared an emotional embrace on Saturday night following the New York Knicks’ victory in the NBA Championship. This marked the Knicks’ first championship title in 53 years, adding to the moment’s significance.
Acknowledging Respect
Jalen’s first acknowledgment after the win was to Coach Mitch Johnson of the Spurs. He explained in an interview with “CBS Mornings” that, “It was just kind of instinct, like it’s kind of how I was raised. Win or loss, you always show respect.” Despite the Spurs’ defeat in the Finals, they finished the season with the second-best record.
Father-Son Relationship
Rick Brunson has been an assistant coach for the Knicks since 2022, having played on their 1999 Eastern Conference championship team. Jalen reflected on their shared journey, saying, “Everyone sees the videos of me and him in the park, but no one saw the conversations we had about my career choice.” Jalen clarified that pursuing basketball was his decision.
Rick’s philosophy on basketball parallels life lessons about hard work and building habits. “We worked every day. The credit goes to him, I just did all the yelling,” Rick joked, prompting Jalen to smile.
Influence of Parents
The Finals MVP initially attributed his leadership style to his mother, Sandra, but quickly acknowledged both parents’ roles. “They did a good job of supporting and pushing me,” he said, noting their efforts to balance love with encouragement.
Handling Pressure
Jalen recounted a controversial non-call involving the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama during Game 3. “I think, no matter what, you’ve got to understand the moment and your main goal,” he stated, emphasizing the need to remain composed.
Comparisons to Knicks’ Legends
Despite Jalen’s success, Rick refrains from declaring his son the greatest Knick of all time. “I’d say Patrick Ewing is the greatest right now,” Rick commented, praising Ewing’s work ethic and 15-year career in New York.
Rick concluded with, “Another seven years, we can revisit that question,” acknowledging the ongoing legacy Jalen is building with the Knicks.
