Norwegian fans are celebrating their country’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years by embracing their Viking roots in Boston. They have also caught the attention of locals with synchronized ‘Viking rows.’ A video shows dozens of fans at Boston’s South Station, some wearing Viking helmets and wrapped in Norwegian flags, performing rowing motions in unison. They chanted ‘Hoo! Hoo!’ while riding an escalator, imitating a Viking longship crew.
Jeremy Siegel, a journalist at WGBH, shared this unique display, calling it a rare sight.
The spontaneous performance gained popularity online. One observer commented on social media, ‘My usual train ride suddenly feels incredibly boring compared to this.’ Another mentioned, ‘I’ve seen fans chant and dance, but rowing a Viking ship up an escalator was unexpected.’
Not all viewers focused solely on the spectacle. Some expressed concern about safety, worried about clothing catching in the escalator gears. Despite these concerns, the event has contributed to Boston’s multicultural atmosphere as international visitors, including World Cup fans, bring their traditions to the city.
Boston is also hosting a wave of Scottish tourists. Recently, they celebrated Scotland’s 1-0 victory over Haiti with a lively march to Fenway Park, aligning with Scottish Heritage Night.
