Journey is currently on their Final Frontier Tour, set to continue until the end of November. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain has shared insights on the band’s impending retirement. In an interview on the Rock & Roll High School podcast, Cain expressed that the fans have been his main motivation to keep performing over the years.
He stated, I think the only reason I’m still out here is the fans, you know?
He added, It’s time for me to close the chapter. It’s a beautiful time to say goodbye, for me.
Cain also reflected on Journey’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. At the ceremony, former Journey singer Steve Perry accepted the award with the band but chose not to perform. Cain commented that he fully expected Perry to join them on stage for a song.
I was certain — I would have bet money he would’ve changed his mind and come and sang ‘Lights’ with us or something, but he didn’t, which was weird,
Cain shared. I kept looking in the wings and he never came.
While it seems unlikely that Perry and Journey will reconcile, Cain remains optimistic. Perry had previously dismissed speculation about joining Journey for their farewell tour. However, Cain mentioned that Perry is always welcome to join them on stage, leaving some hope for fans.
Journey has been a significant name in rock music and their departure marks the end of an era. Despite the unresolved situation with Perry, the band has toured for decades and is ready to move on.
