Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that ground troops have pushed deeper into Lebanon, turning up the pressure in a conflict with Hezbollah that has worn down a monthlong cease-fire. During a visit to troops near the Lebanese border, Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli forces had crossed the Litani River. This river has historically marked a boundary in cease-fire agreements within southern Lebanon.
As Israeli airstrikes continue to strike the region, the government issued evacuation warnings for southern Lebanese areas. The Lebanese health ministry reported over 3,300 fatalities since hostilities with Israel reignited in early March.
The military escalation coincides with scheduled talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials at the Pentagon. These U.S.-mediated discussions aim to stabilize the border and curb the violence. Further political negotiations are anticipated in the coming week.
Crossing the Litani is symbolically significant, demonstrating Israeli forces extending beyond what they term their “forward defense line.” This line lies several miles within Lebanon, where Israeli invasions began in March.
This river is positioned approximately 15 to 20 miles north of Israel and sweeps closer to the border in the east, where recent clashes have occurred. Israeli troops have traversed the Litani in past confrontations with Hezbollah.
Under pressure from domestic hard-liners, Netanyahu has urged intensified military efforts against Hezbollah. On Thursday, for the first time in nearly a month, an Israeli strike targeted near Beirut. Persistent drone attacks by Hezbollah on Israeli positions in southern Lebanon maintain a threat for Israeli forces. Netanyahu faces calls from within Israel to bolster security for northern communities under threat from Hezbollah rocket attacks.
Discussants at the Pentagon are set to focus on disarmament of Hezbollah, an Israeli priority in the talks. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasizing that reaching a cease-fire is vital for any further progress.
The conflict with Israel continues amid delicately poised negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at terminating the larger-scale war. Iran insists any resolutions must halt Israeli offensives against Hezbollah. Lebanon could become a crucial arena in securing a broad accord.
Israel’s military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, reiterated Netanyahu’s declarations, affirming their forces are advancing and will persist in targeting Hezbollah.
