Former Spice Girls member Mel B commended Elsie’s voice but felt the original track didn’t fully exhibit her abilities. “You’re clearly an amazing singer, but I think, for me personally, you should have done a different song,” Mel B expressed. “Your vocals were great, but there’s more under the surface.”
Howie Mandel’s critique prompted loud boos from the audience after he was the only judge with a “no” vote. “From the moment you walked out, I thought, ‘This is a star.’ You look and sound like a star. But the song left me unsure about your identity as an artist,” Mandel said.
Sofia Vergara didn’t want a single song choice to define Elsie’s prospects in the competition. “I do think you have it,” Vergara stated. “A wrong choice doesn’t end your journey here. I’m voting yes because I believe in second chances.”
Simon Cowell identified potential in Elsie, suggesting she may have over-prepared. “What happened today is that you over-prepped,” Cowell remarked. “You need to release some of that control and be more raw. You have the glow of a star.” Despite Mandel’s dissenting vote, Mel B, Cowell, and Vergara voted “yes,” advancing Elsie to the next round.
Backstage, host Terry Crews inquired if Elsie was open to modifying her act. She promptly affirmed, “I’m from Mississippi; I’ll stomp and sing with no music.”
