The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a severe ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter at Allegiant Stadium. After catching a deep pass, Thornton was tackled by Raiders safety Treydan Stukes, who fell on Thornton’s left ankle.
Initially, Thornton held onto the ball, appearing ready to celebrate. However, upon realizing his foot was awkwardly positioned, he understood the severity of his injury.
Announcers Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt were visibly concerned when the replay was aired. Watt remarked, “Oh, no,” while Nantz added, “Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to look at it.” This reflected the shock upon seeing the injury.
Medical staff immobilized Thornton’s leg in an air cast before taking him off the field. While the Chiefs confirmed an ankle injury, no further diagnosis was released at that time.
Thornton had recently become a key player for the Chiefs. Originally a Patriots 2022 second-round pick, he joined the Chiefs’ practice squad in 2024, earned a spot on their roster in 2025, and re-signed after an impressive season. He had tallied 438 yards and three touchdowns, and before his injury, he recorded 111 yards with two touchdowns in the game.
The Chiefs were also without Rashee Rice, who sustained a hamstring injury earlier in the game. Rice had accumulated 190 yards in the season, leaving Kansas City potentially missing two vital players.
Thornton’s 55-yard reception paved the way for Kenneth Walker’s decisive touchdown, securing the Chiefs’ 30-27 victory and maintaining their perfect record at 4-0.
There is hope that Thornton’s injury may not be as dire as it seemed. Nonetheless, the visual impact was significant.
