First-term Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte triumphed over her primary opponents on Tuesday, setting the stage for a critical general election against Democratic contender Cinde Warmington, who was unchallenged in her party’s nomination.
Ayotte, seeking a second two-year term as the leader of New Hampshire, defeated Republican rivals Shaun Fife and Bob Wayne McClory. She first won the governorship in 2024, defeating former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and maintaining the office in Republican hands after the retirement of Governor Chris Sununu.
Previously, Ayotte served as New Hampshire’s attorney general from 2004 to 2009 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. She served one term in the Senate but lost her bid for reelection in 2016 to Democrat Maggie Hassan. Ayotte made a political comeback in 2024 with Sununu’s endorsement after he chose not to seek another term.
During her first term, Ayotte reversed parts of the state’s bail reform law, arguing the prior system was too lenient on suspects awaiting trial. She also signed legislation requiring public schools to limit student cellphone use and enforced penalties for drivers who declined Breathalyzer tests.
However, Ayotte faced criticism from the left due to a state budget that led to cuts in state agencies.
In the upcoming election, Ayotte will face Warmington, who served two terms on New Hampshire’s Executive Council, being the only Democrat on the five-member body. This marks Warmington’s second campaign for governor, having lost the Democratic primary in 2024.
Warmington has criticized Ayotte for not strongly opposing President Donald Trump on issues like healthcare cuts, tariffs, and the conflict in Iran. The Concord Monitor reported that Ayotte avoided aligning with Trump during much of her first term, emphasizing, “I’m standing with the people of New Hampshire,” when asked about her stance.
