Nicolas Cage’s oceanfront property suffered damage when the driveway collapsed, forming a sinkhole. The incident occurred after several days of rough surf, causing significant structural issues.
The driveway in front of Cage’s residence crumbled, creating a 30 by 30-foot hole. Video footage shows the exposed beams supporting his house, with concrete and pieces of the glass fence visible within the sinkhole. Local authorities placed orange cones around the affected area for safety.
The collapse was reportedly caused by coastal erosion linked to Hurricane Marie, which brought strong waves and high tides from the Pacific Ocean. This information was confirmed by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“The City of Malibu released a statement regarding the incident, acknowledging the driveway’s collapse and a gas leak detected at the site.”
Early on Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department responded to the situation, closing the private road and addressing the gas leak.
The city’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company are assessing the situation. Five homes have been prohibited from entry, marked as red-tagged due to safety concerns. Continuous assessment will determine any further dangers to the surrounding area, with updates provided as needed.
Though no evacuations were ordered, Malibu city officials are monitoring potential coastal erosion issues. Special attention is being given to the Pacific Coast Highway in the Palisades Fire burn area and Westward Beach, both impacted by high tides and strong waves.
The city is also preparing for possible severe weather conditions caused by El Niño, which could bring storms, heavy rain, mudslides, and additional coastal erosion along the Southern California coast.
Nicolas Cage bought the beachfront home in 2024 for $10.5 million, according to Realtor.com. The 4,000-square-foot home boasts a rooftop deck and a ground-level outdoor lounge area. Its floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning ocean views. Cage was apparently not present during the driveway collapse, and no injuries were reported.
Cage’s career includes notable films such as “Moonlight,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Moonstruck,” “Face/Off,” and “Gone In 60 Seconds,” with “Leaving Las Vegas” earning him an Academy Award.
In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Cage expressed his interest in expanding his acting repertoire. He mentioned a preference for independently spirited films where he can explore a broader range of roles. Cage emphasized the importance of working to avoid self-destructive habits, such as excessive drinking.
