Kentucky Defensive Lineman Nic Smith Dies at 20

Nic Smith, a defensive lineman for Kentucky, has passed away at the age of 20, as announced by the program. Smith was a redshirt freshman with the Wildcats during the previous season. Kentucky coach Will Stein expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.”

The tragic news surfaced after campus police were alerted to a potential body at an on-campus residence hall, according to a university spokesperson. Later that day, the university confirmed Smith’s death.

The University of Kentucky Police Department is collaborating with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner, and initial investigations show no signs of foul play. “This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” Coach Stein continued in his statement.

Smith was enrolled as a sophomore in the community leadership and development program at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. His biography on the Kentucky athletic department’s website mentions his nicknames “Happy” and “Big Happ.” Smith had a background in football and basketball from Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia.
