Planned Parenthood intensified its efforts on Capitol Hill as staff and supporters sought to prevent Republicans from continuing efforts to cut the organization off from federal funds. The issue stems from a provision in last year’s legislation that blocked the organization’s health centers from billing Medicaid for services like contraception and cancer screenings. This provision deprived Planned Parenthood of more than $700 million annually, as Medicaid serves as their main funding source. The provision is due to expire on July 4, allowing Planned Parenthood to potentially regain significant Medicaid funding. Meanwhile, anti-abortion groups are urging Republicans to keep the restrictions in place.
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America, along with regional affiliates, organized a lobbying day at Capitol Hill with over 250 supporters, including patients sharing their stories. Jess Clem, a patient advocate from Minnesota, emphasized the importance of these stories to influence lawmakers.
On the same day, the House Appropriations Committee was reviewing the fiscal year 2027 Health and Human Services funding bill, which includes a measure aimed at “defunding” Planned Parenthood. Some House Republicans expressed a desire to use the reconciliation process to attempt to block Medicaid users from accessing Planned Parenthood services.
According to Nora Walsh-DeVries, vice president of political and legislative affairs at PPFA, defunding Planned Parenthood is unpopular and detrimental to people’s health and safety. She stressed the urgency of remaining vigilant, mentioning the potential challenges posed by a lame duck Congress at the year’s end and the importance of strategic planning with Democrats for future legislative protections.
The ongoing political battle around Planned Parenthood and Medicaid ties into broader discussions about health care policies and funding. It highlights the organization’s role in reproductive health services and the potential consequences of legislative decisions on public health.
