The start of Kyler Murray’s tenure with the Minnesota Vikings has not gone as planned. The team’s new starting quarterback faced a rough beginning when he threw an interception on only his second play during the regular-season opener. This interception was Murray’s first pass donning the Vikings uniform, and it occurred at their home stadium.
After this early setback, things worsened for Murray during the game. He was injured and knocked out during his team’s third possession. The Vikings, who secured Murray in the offseason to be their main quarterback, saw him leave the field in the first quarter on Sunday.
Once off the field, Murray underwent a concussion evaluation. Officially listed as questionable to return, viewers noted that the severity of his injury likely concluded his participation that day. The Vikings eventually ruled him out of the game.
During the game, Murray faced a challenging situation when scrambling. Packers defensive end Lukas Van Ness delivered a forearm to Murray’s helmet, resulting in a hit that brought him down. Additionally, safety Javon Bullard struck Murray around the neck and head area, causing his helmet to dislodge.
As Murray laid on the field, he displayed a response known as the fencing response posture. This involuntary reaction occurs when an injured individual extends one arm rigidly while the other arm flexes into the air following a blow to the head.
Bullard received a personal foul for unnecessary roughness.
Despite the collision, Murray managed to walk off the field without assistance and headed to the locker room. Following the injury, Carson Wentz replaced Murray to continue the game.
Murray is now slated to enter the NFL concussion protocol. This process involves rigorous testing, and independent physicians will decide when he can return to play. Generally, the recovery timeline for a first concussion is about two weeks, but it can vary between one and three weeks.
Undoubtedly, this bumpy start to the season marks a challenging opening to Murray’s career with the Vikings.
