LeBron James, regarded as one of the greatest NBA players, will leave the Los Angeles Lakers before the 2026-2027 season begins. The team confirmed the departure of the 41-year-old free agent who spent eight productive years with the franchise. James led the Lakers to their 17th NBA title during the 2019-2020 season, altered by the pandemic.
In a statement, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss expressed appreciation for James’ contributions. She said, “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.”
Lakers’ triumph in the 2020 NBA Finals, with James holding both the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy and NBA Finals MVP Trophy, remains a memorable moment.
The future destination of James remains uncertain. The free agency negotiation window for the NBA opens at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday. During his time in Los Angeles, James set records as the NBA’s all-time leader in points scored, games played, and seasons. He holds a record 22 NBA All-Star selections and hasn’t yet spoken publicly about his departure.
James first gained national attention as a high school player in Akron, Ohio, becoming the first overall draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. His initial tenure with the Cavs included a trip to the 2007 NBA Finals, but frustration with the team’s performance led to his move to the Miami Heat in 2011. With fellow stars Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, the team, known as ‘The Heatles’, secured two championships in four years. The Heat became one of the first significant “super teams” built via free agency.
Returning to Cleveland in 2014, James joined forces with Kyrie Irving. Together, they reached the NBA Finals for four consecutive seasons, facing the Golden State Warriors each time. The Cavaliers’ notable win came in the 2015-2016 championship, overcoming a 3-1 deficit to triumph in seven games, a finals’ first.
James became a Laker ahead of the 2018-2019 season. The team’s future now looks towards Luka Doncic, who joined the Lakers in a significant trade from the Dallas Mavericks last year and signed a three-year extension in 2025.
