LeBron James has announced his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, signaling another pivotal decision in his basketball journey. Sixteen years after his major move from Cleveland to Miami, James is preparing to don new colors. He informed the Lakers that his eight-year tenure with them has ended, and he plans to play a record-extending 24th NBA season elsewhere.
James has emphasized his goal of winning more championships, suggesting he’ll choose a team with strong title prospects for 2027. Speculation includes Golden State as a potential destination, though revisits to Cleveland or Miami might be considered. Alternatively, the San Antonio Spurs could be on his radar, offering a chance to team up with Victor Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 global star.
James reflected, “I’ve done it all. I’ve seen it all,” after his final Lakers game in May. He highlighted competition for championships as a key motivator. His decision to play another year indicates family support, as his wife, Savannah, and daughter, Zhuri, have significant input on his career decisions.
The decision about where he will play next ranks among the most critical of the NBA offseason, alongside trade rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami. The Lakers expressed gratitude for James’ eight-season contribution.
“LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history,” Lakers’ co-owner Jeanie Buss stated, appreciating his role in the 2020 championship and various record-breaking achievements. “He will always be part of the Lakers family.”
According to ESPN, James’ long-term agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, confirmed his plans. James can begin discussions with new teams once the league’s free-agent period begins after 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. However, contract signings are on hold until the offseason moratorium ends on July 6.
Golden State’s potential interest in James grew when Draymond Green opted out of his $27.6 million contract option, providing his team with roster flexibility. Green, acknowledging his loyalty to the Warriors, expressed willingness to help the organization’s efforts.
James has faced Golden State four times in the NBA Finals during his time with Cleveland. He shares strong ties with Warriors players like Green and Stephen Curry, as well as coach Steve Kerr. Curry and Kerr were also teammates and coach, respectively, for James in the USA Basketball at the 2024 Paris Games.
James spent a notable eight years with the Lakers, his longest single stint with a team, securing a championship in 2020 and breaking several records, including becoming the NBA’s all-time points leader.
His career started in Cleveland for seven years, followed by a four-year stint in Miami, where he won his first two championships. He returned to Cleveland for four more years and joined the Lakers in 2018. At 42 by December, James remains the NBA’s eldest active player and the first in league history to enter a 23rd season.
His career accolades include 22 All-Star selections, 21 All-NBA selections, and four MVP awards. Most recently, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. For his career, James has averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists over 1,600 games.
