Allison Tilly stepped up during an emergency, transforming Lemont’s week into a memorable championship success. Facing injuries and other challenges, Lemont needed a new goalkeeper for the sectional match. Tilly, typically a defender and a sophomore, volunteered despite lacking experience in the net.
“I play basketball, volleyball, and softball,” Tilly remarked. “I believed I could handle this. With no one else available, I decided to step in. I practiced on Monday, survived Tuesday’s game, and have been learning intensely since then. It’s all been intense; I never anticipated performing at this level.”
On Friday night, Tilly excelled, making eight crucial saves to secure Lemont’s 2-1 win over the host Celtics in the Class 2A Providence Sectional championship in New Lenox. She demonstrated remarkable skill, especially during key moments late in the game.
“It was intimidating. My nerves were high, hoping against shots,” Tilly confessed. Despite many attempts, she managed effectively. “She was extraordinary in those final moments,” Coach Prangen praised her.
Lemont also benefited from Gabriela Kuruc’s two goals with Madison Weil assisting, allowing the team to claim its first sectional title since 2018. Lemont (22-1-1), now advancing to the Kankakee Supersectional to face Geneva, aims to extend Coach Rick Prangen’s final season before retirement.
“Reaching this milestone, absent since 2018, feels amazing,” Tilly expressed. “With Coach Prangen’s retirement and uncertainty about next year’s coaching, we strive to make this season memorable.”
During the game, Providence’s Aubrey Curry scored to tie, but Kuruc’s quick shot restored Lemont’s lead, showcasing their training’s impact.
“Preparation for swift gameplay proved crucial, highlighting this in the match,” Kuruc commented.
In Lemont’s triumph, Tilly’s defenders thanked her for her adaptability. Following the match, Tilly received heartfelt praise from Assistant Coach Mark Tomczak, who rushed to celebrate her contribution.
Reflecting on her journey, Tilly said, “From initial jitters to this moment of triumph, I’ve felt surreal pride for aiding my team’s accomplishment.”
